2021 International Mother Language Day: VON, UN Others Partner On Promoting Multilingualism

Global attention will be focussed on the use of mother language in education from Friday February 19, 2021 as stakeholders in media, arts, culture and education in Nigeria are set to mark the International Mother Language Day.

The day is usually commemorated every February 21, and the theme for this year’s commemoration is “Fostering Multilingualism for inclusion in education and Society”.

Consequently, the UNESCO headquarters has scheduled a webinar meeting for Friday 19th, 2021 to set the tone for this year’s commemoration.

In Nigeria, Voice of Nigeria (VON) , will be partnering with the United Nations Information Centre(UNIC) and other critical stakeholders in the information and culture sector to host another webinar meeting on Monday February 22,2021.

These stakeholders include the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization(CBAAC), Nigerian Film Corporation(NFC) and the National Institute for Cultural Orientation(NICO) to host.

Speakers at Monday 22, 2021 webinar meeting in Nigeria will key into the objectives of this year’s commemoration as set by the UNESCO, using the Nigerian peculiarities of educational system, media programming and cultural initiatives

The webinar aims to:
• Enhance inclusion in education through inclusive policy and practice in teaching and learning integrating multilingualism;
• Promote a comprehensive inclusive early childhood education and care with all children living and learning together through multilingualism;
• Contribute to developing and sustaining inclusive society through multilingualism.

WEBINAR THEMES

The webinar will address two themes.These are:
• Rethinking inclusive policy and practice in teaching and learning in multilingual contexts
• Enhancing inclusion through multilingualism, including sign language, in early childhood education and care (ECCE), the foundation for learning.

Among those expected to speak at the event are the Tanzanian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Chief Executives of partnering organizations, Media Managers, Development Experts and scholars from various backgrounds.
