2022 NSF: Team Lagos dominates badminton events

Team Lagos dominated the badminton event’s podium on the final day of the 2022 National Sports Festival (NSF) in Asaba on Saturday.

They won three gold medals from the games played at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Stephen Keshi Stadium..

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that African champion Anuoluwapo Opeyori won the gold medals in the men’s singles, men’s doubles and team event.

In the men’s singles, Opeyori secured a 21-11 21-6 win over Aliyu Shehu from Niger, while Mujitapha Umar from Bauchi state and Victor Ikechukwu from Rivers won the event’s bronze medals.

Team Lagos got another gold medal in the men’s doubles with Opeyori teaming up with Daniel Egbonyi to defeat Team Oyo’s pair of Gideon Babalola and Abeeb Bello.

Team Taraba’s pair of Bulus Ginkan and Daniel Phillip and Team Delta’s pair of Isaac Minaphee and Enejoh Abah settled for the bronze medals.

In the male team event, Team Lagos ended up with the gold medal, while Team Delta won silver and Team Oyo and Team Ogun settled for the bronze.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles, it was an all-Team Edo affair as Ruth Ebere defeated her teammate, Deborah Enejoh, to win the gold medal.

Sofiat Obanisola and Zainab Alabi, both from Team Kwara, got the bronze medals.

In the women’s doubles, Team Delta with Ebere and Enejoh won the gold medal, while Team Ogun through Dorcas Adesokan and Aminat Ilori got the silver medal.

Obanisola and Alabi from Kwara and Funke Aiyenugba alongside Rukayat Jimoh from Delta settled for the bronze medals.

In the female team event, Team Edo got the gold medal, Team Ogun emerged silver medalists, while Team Lagos and Team Kwara shared the bronze medals.

Speaking later on the performance of Team Lagos, Moses Kolawole, the Director of Sports at the state’s Sports Commission (LSSC), told NAN that Lagos had conscientiously raised a formidable badminton team.

“We have a good team in badminton and we so much believe and have confidence in them. We have a programme that works for us.

“We have the field where raw talents can be raised from, even to the level of supplying other states as well”, he said.(NAN
