LASEMA has rescued seven people alive, recovered six dead with a suspended search for remaining nine of the 22 persons in the Ikorodu boat mishap.
According to an eyewitness, the incident from which three males and four females were rescued, with six dead adult females, occurred when the passenger boat enroute Ikorodu jetty terminal from Ebute – Ero (Lagos Island) via lagos waterways capzised around 19:30hrs yesterday.
In the unfortunate incident which operation was suspended at about 18:20hrs today where so far six adult females lost their lives, the search is still ongoing for the boat captain, his assistant and seven others that make up the 22 passengers in the boat instead of the 14 it should have ferried in compliance with dictates of social distancing by Covid-19 pandemic.
So far, of the six dead adult females recovered at the Ipakodo ferry terminal and deposited in the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue, three are partly identified. One is Chidera, an undergraduate that studied International Relations awaiting her call up letter, whose mother was amongst the survivors, Risi and Silifat, including Mrs. Ibikunle one of the lucky survivors of the incident which search and recovery operation has been suspended, who recounted her experience, are all resident in Ikorodu axis of Lagos.
Preliminary Report regarding the boat mishap incident at Ikorodu Ferry Terminal has it that, “on getting to the incident scene it was revealed that a boat enroute Ikorodu jetty terminal from Ebute – Ero (Lagos Island) via lagos waterways capzised around 19:30hrs.
“Unfortunately six adult females lost their lives to the incident and were recovered. The boat captain and his assistant could not be found as search and rescue effort continue to recover the remaining victims. The (6) commodity (all females) has been deposited at Ikorodu General Hospital morgue.
“LASEMA Response Teams from Lekki and Agbowa, Officers of the Nigerian Police Force Ipakodo division, LASAMBUS and LASWA Officials were the responders present at the incident”
Recovery operation suspended about 18:20hrs. All other activities has been postponed till tomorrow morning due to nightfall and the heavy downpour.
